How we work

The local chapters

Local SU chapters can be found in almost every dominantly Swedish-speaking or bi-lingual city or municipality in the country. These areas can mainly be found along the coastline, which stretches from Lovisa in the east to Karleby in the north-west. The local chapters play a vibrant party in municipal decision-making, and their members can be found in the local councils and boards. The local chapters arrange a multitude of various activities for their members, ranging from political seminars to lighter outings. As a member in SU you are automatically also a member in a local chapter.

The Districts

SU consists of four districts; Helsingfors, Nyland, Åboland and Österbotten. The districts are a gathering point for the local chapters in their area. The district is governed by a board consisting of members from the various local chapters, and running errands are taken care of by a full-time employee, also known as a political secretary.

The National Board

The National Board and its chairman is elected for a one year-period. The National Board is in charge of political decision-making, hiring of employees and financial decision-making. The National Board consists of its chairman, two vice-chairmen and ten members and their personal substitutes.

The Assembly

The Assembly is our most powerful decision-making organ. The Assembly congregates once a year, and consists of representatives from the local chapters. The amount of representatives that a local chapter can send to the Assembly is dependent on how big the local chapter is. Apart from electing the National Board the Assembly also draws the organisation’s main political structures for one year at the time and approves the organisation’s budget and accounts.
